International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival

Tags:

So Dublin once again plays host to the Gay Theatre Festival, as I write this the festival is half way through. There are many shows on ranging from Terrence McNally’s Corpus Christi to Carolyn Gage’s The Countess and the Lesbians all of which cater for a broad range of people and I must congratulate the organisers for all the work that obviously goes into putting on such a massive event over such a long period of time.

I had the pleasure of going to see “Nijinsky’s Last Dance” in the Project Arts Centre over the weekend. Ricardo Melendez’s performance had to be seen to be believed! I don’t know if I’d recommend the play to everyone but I really enjoyed it and am speechlessly in awe of the man who brought it to life. I have seen a few plays in my time and have had the pleasure of witnessing some great performances but this left me breathless. He was outstanding and kept everyone routed to their seats as he seemed to effortlessly change from one character to another as he told this engrossing story of a great talent who was exploited and ultimately left to decline into insanity.

I have heard some people complain that the festival doesn’t cater enough for some groups within the community and I suppose this is true but I’m sure this will be looked at for future events. I just think it’s great that more and more gay events are taking place annually and I love walking up the road and seeing a poster or a flag advertising that these events are happening and indicating to people how popular they are, not just within the community but to everyone.
