Unwanted

There are so many people out there who really want to be parents! For whatever reason they’re finding it difficult to realise this dream. In some cases it’s medical, in some it’s social and for others it’s due to their sexuality. In each case I think we, as a society, really empathise with this situation as wanting to become a parent, although not for everyone, is something we can all relate to and respect.

It is for all of these reasons and more that I find stories like the one I read this morning in “The Telegraph” so disturbing and frankly highly annoying.

It seems that having gone through IVF in India a mother aged 59 and father 72, returned to England for the birth of what turned out to be twins. A wonderful occasion you’d imagine. However, this couple said immediately after the birth that they did not want “the wrong sex” and have abandoned them in the hospital!

We all try not to judge people but this is off the chart. All those people out there who would give their right arm for not one, but two healthy babies and this couple just walk away. Female babies are often abandoned in India but this is the first time in England. The babies have had no visitors since being born less than a fortnight ago.

What’s wrong with people? I know that different cultures see people differently but come on how could anyone leave their children behind? Let alone a couple who had gone threw so much to become pregnant in the first place. I wonder will they be allowed go through IVF again – I hope not. Perhaps that sounds harsh but right now I’m livid. The father is reported as having asked when is wife will be able to try IVF again so they can have a boy who will pass on the family name. Seems to me that this will send shock waves through England, which is so multi-cultured.

Let’s hope that one of the couples out their looking to become parents get to adopt these beautiful girls and that they are given the love they so richly deserve.

EDIT:

Since publishing this story I have read that the father involved rejects reports that he and his wife didn’t want their daughters.  Let’s hope this is true and the girls are raised in a loving home

  1. That story has since been said to have been incorrectly reported: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23783318-1702,00.html
