Anyone for Tennis

So the French Open is over and Nadal and Ivanovic are champions. Ivanovic was favourite all the way in her final against Safina which she went on to win 6-4 6-3 in just over an hour and a half. Safina had a good start and forced Ivanovic to make some early errors but I think there was only ever going to be one winner. Ivanovic took the second set with some ease in the end. There were quite a few seeding places between the two and Safina did herself proud.

I usually much prefer the women’s game to the mens, in fact I can’t think of a single time when that wasn’t the case. However, over the weekend I was really looking forward to Federer v Nadal. They really are the top two in the world with Federer ahead and on the cusp of being the best ever. In his way is adding the French open to his ever growing list of titles and to do that he has to beat the man who owns clay court tennis, Rafa Nadal. I have to admit to being a Nadal fan, he’s such a little sweety and I find Federer arrogant in the extreme, so I was cheering Nadal on from the get go. Nadal is unbeaten in Roland Garros , before yeaterday he had won this open 3 times in a row, a fourth and he’d be equalling Borg’s record. So both players had a piece of history to play for. Nadal to be the best ever in Paris, Federer to be the best ever overall. The question at the start was: Would Nadal win in an easy match or would Federer take him to 5 sets and go for glory? A great competition should have followed.

Instead what followed was a white-wash. Nadal played Federer off the court and took the final 6-1 6-3 6-0. He broke Federer’s opening serve in each of the three sets. In fairness Federer did have a bit of a go in the second set, breaking back to level pegging at one stage but again, there was only ever going to be one winner. Nadal won the whole competition without loosing a set – now that’s domination of a tournament. It’ll be a different story in Wimbledon, but I’d say Nadal will fancy his chances after yesterday’s outstanding performance.
