The beautiful, chauvinist game - Euro 2008

Sexism [All links open in a new window]

This evening’s Germany v Turkey semi-final of UEFA’s Euro 2008 marked the anti-racism theme of the tournament with speeches from the team captains on the subject.

Brandished about during the competition have been flags, banners and badges with the word “RESPECT” proudly displayed.

Yet, the organisers of Euro 2008 were entirely satisfied to stage a game of beach football prior to the recent Germany v Austria game, the teams of which comprised topless women [link, if I must]. Of course, they were surrounded by a hoarde of boozing, drooling, fat men.

Clearly, then, RESPECT only goes so far in this bastion of sexism.
