This is a fascinating look at what in my mind is something of a taboo subject when talking about WWII.  Ok the article is a review of a book I’ve yet to read, but the thought that Jews could be Nazis boggles the mind.

When you think about it, the first thing to come to mind are Jews who hide their religion because of anti-Semetic feelings and fear that what was happening in the camps could happen to them. Undoubedtly that was a huge factor.

However, we all know so much about Hitler’s so -called ‘Final Solution’ that it’s difficult for us to imagine (or believe) that Germans in the army had no idea that the concentration camps existed. But many had no clue. They were under the impression force-fed them, that they were fighting for the Fatherland.

It has to be stated, that one of the reasons Hitler and the Nazis came to power at all was as a result of anti-Semetic accusations that Jews had all the money, that’s why Christians were poor. So there had to be some degree of anti-Semitism in the country.

That doesn’t mean all of the Germans in the army would agree with genocide. It’s a huge leap from racism and hatred to something as vile as concentration camps and organised genocide.

It is a shock that Jews were in the German army but only because we have 20-20 vision from the studies and examinations of what we know happened. They had no clue. And it just adds to the tragedy.

Can you imagine the emotional fallout when it all come out? When you realised what you’d been fighting for?
