Lisbon or Nice?

The French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, gave a speech to the European Parliament this morning where he spoke about the Lisbon treaty. In this speech he said that “Institutional things are for members of parliament, rather than referendums, it’s a political choice and perfectly democratic.” This comment got an applause from it’s audience and I have to say I’m suprised.
I know that we threw a spanner in the works, but it seems to me that Mr Sarkozy’s comment is a direct slight of our system! He did say that “It is not for a Frenchman to judge the Irish ‘No’. We must not offend our Irish colleagues” but for me that seems a bit empty.
I realise that we need to know under which treaty the next elections will be held, the new Lisbon treaty or the old Nice treaty, but every country has a right to it’s own system does it not?
France is next to lead the European Parliament and Mr Sarkozy indicated that in consultation with the Irish government he will try to reform the treaty and reach a solution to the current problems. Let’s hope they take our ‘No’ vote seriously. It really annoys me when they just keep asking us to vote till they get the answer they’re looking for.

I saw Des Bishop at the weekend and I felt he summed up the Lisbon Treaty perfectly when he joked about Irish Referendums as if we were all school kids solving a maths problem……”there’s a right answer and a wrong answer, and we’ll keep doing it till you get it right” and in further Mrs Doyle fashion, “Will ya have a bit of Lisbon?” Answer…”no, sure i’m grand” Response” Ah g’wan ya will, sure have a bit o’ Lisbon, ya will, ya will, ya will” Response, “G’wan then, with two sugars”
thanks for the comment Pam,
