The Mist

[All links open in a new window]

My girlfriend is obsessed with disaster movies, so I have sat though quite a few in recent times. Some are ok, some are truly forgettable and apparently, some are just so bad, they are fantastically brilliant (according to her, at least).

So I wasn’t sure what to make of The Mist when it was first suggested to me today. Then again, the film is based on a novella by Stephen King, who has a decent track record when it comes to story-telling.

On this occasion, his story is set in a small, American lake-side town and revolves around events unleashed after a spectacular storm. What follows is a nerve-jangling series of events illustrating, through a finely balanced mix of gore and the power of suggestion, how society can easily break down into chaos as a result of confusion and the fear of the unknown.

The fact that no Hollywood stars are “gracing” the screen in this film leaves the audience guessing what will happen next, and to whom. This refreshing sense of anticipation and unpredictability lasts throughout the entire duration of the film. Thankfully, too, a host of familiar and strong character actors are each able to make their roles their own.

As someone who loathes hearing discussion of any film before I’ve seen it, I won’t give too much more away. This film, however, is worth seeing for the thrills and jumps along the way, and in the true tradition of the disaster genre, do remember to leave any disbelief at the door!
