Women in Sport

The British Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has announced a new commission which will basically look at why there are so few women in sport. Not just athletes but volunteers and managers. Apparently there is a big drop out of women when they reach their late teens and the commission has been set the task of looking into why this is so and asking the question – what can be done to keep women in sport in all areas?
It will include the likes of double Olympic gold medalist Dame Kelly Holmes as well as executive deputy chairman of Millwall FC Heather Rabbatts.
The most obvious thing from my mind, is the lack of media coverage of women in sport. I’m a big Arsenal fan and have had the pleasure of seeing the Arsenal Ladies play live, they’re brill and I’d watch them if they were on but the only time you really see women in football is for the FA Cup final. I really think that is a shame. Newspapers are as bad, very rarely are they reported. The Arsenal Ladies did the quadrupedal not that long ago (league, FA Cup, league cup, European Cup) but it was nowhere to be seen save the Arsenal website and fan sites who reported on it proudly.
Let’s hope the commission comes up with some answers and just as importantly does something about them.
