For as long as I can remember a company called “Olivia” has been advertising in the gay press, they host lesbian cruises and apparently they also have a record label. I used to wonder, in my teenage years, what a cruise like that would be like. I think it’d be great but I do hate “organised fun” so that would put me off somewhat. The L Word had an episode on one of those cruises, episode #11 of season 2, it was gas and I think it made us all want to go on one.
Now, however, Olivia are branching out yet again. They are currently selling homes in Tucson, Arizona. The development has 334 units which are open to be bought by anyone, but they are targeting the lesbian market.
I have to say I thought this was an interesting idea. Part of me thinks it’d be lovely to live surrounded by other lesbians, another part wonders why I should?
According to reports most of the people putting down deposits fall into the 55 to 70 year-old age group and this makes sense to me. Whatever about living all your life surrounded by lesbians, it’d appeal to me to retire surrounded by them. That report also says that the company will be hosting trips for the residents, again, that would appeal to me more in my retirement I think, I’m far to socially inept to go on one of those now, so sadly enough, that too would turn me off. Terrible to be awkward isn’t it!
If you’re interested in reading more on this subject, I’d advise you to have a look on the official site to learn more.
I personally think it’s a really interesting idea and will be keeping an eye on it to see how it goes.
Hmm, that is a good idea allright - i can’t imagine anything worse then spending my twilight years in deepest suburbia, especially in the States - but on the other hand, its hints strongly at getto-isation, when we should all be striving to integrate ourselves and our relationships into society…
Thanks for your comment.
I have to agree that it’s a thin line between having a comfortable space and isolating outselves. It’ll be interesting to see how it pans out
God I can’t think of anything more depressing than living with no one other than lesbians. Just as it would be boring as hell to live with all white, all Irish, all gay or all female. Mixing it up makes it more interesting, for me anyway.
I like it
