The Olympics
So today at around 1pm our time, the opening ceremony will commence. I for one won’t be watching: yes I’m in work, but also because of the situation in Tibet. It all seems a little off, but then I have blogged about that in the politics section already so I’ll leave that there.
The soccer starts the events off, the women’s and then the men’s. There has been some debate as to the obligation of clubs to release their players for the tournament, not least the ongoing saga of Messi and Barcelona. Will they release him or not? To make a long story short, he wants to play so left Spain for China, Barca went to court to get permission to make him come back to play for them when the league opens – now they say they’ll let him play? It’s all a load of rubbish. He did have a goal and an assist in their opening game, beating Cote d’Ivoire 2-1.
Then we have the swimming. I don’t know much about swimming but I know the torpedo from Oz has retired so it’ll be up to someone else to become a household name overnight. For a full listing of the games see here.
Sports like tennis and football all have professionals playing – isn’t it supposed to be amateur? Or am I living in the dark ages? I just feel like I can’t get into it this year and so will refrain from doing my usual hour after hour of watching some bizarre sport and instead will try to prepare myself for the upcoming premier league and Ryder Cup.
