Michael Mc Killop wins gold for Ireland in Beijing

Last night the man from Co. Antrim took Ireland’s first gold in this years paralympics in China.  He did so by winning the final of the mens Men’s 800m – T37.  Not only did the 18 year old win gold but he broke his own world record in the precess, taking almost three seconds off his previous best to finish in a time of 1:59.39.

The Bird’s Nest Stadium was full to the brim to see the Irish man leave the rest of the athelets for dead as he ran to victory.  Micheal became the first to break the two minute barrier in this event, link.

“Just like the Olympics, paralympians deserve a lap of honour so I had to take my opportunity,” McKillop told BBC Sport.  He also said that he hoped the victory would “mean an awful lot” to the people back in Ireland and I’m sure I speak for us all when I say congratulations to him for a wonderful performance.
