hey, Ive done a few of these types of active holidays (Intrepid and G-Adventures, formerally GAP) and they are incredibly good fun - Im literally just back from 3 weeks trekking in Nepal. I went on my own but met up with a group who turned out to be pretty cool. Even the non-gay themed active breaks are pretty cool as you meet many new people who generally are like-minded wrt travel, experiencing culture shock etc. But I do admit that it would be nice to organise to travel with other gay people as the selection of OUT-trips are quite limited. Plus its always good to tack on a day or two either side of the trek to sightsee ... so having someone to hang out with is kinda handy!

In terms of cost - usually all transport, accommodation etc are included in the fee. 10 days trekking in Nepal was 600E, 5 days up Kilimanjaro was about 600E as well. Sure there's not much to spend your money on when you're hiking across a mountain in the middle of nowhere. When you think about it, a weekend in NY would far in exceed that cost when you include hotels, city transport, food, and compulsory shopping...

When you break down the price per day its not as bad of a shock. Especially when you have your meals, accommodation, transport and sightseeing included. The main thing to point out is that its not a "package holiday" in the tradtional sense and there is plenty of free time every day to do your own thing. I've travelled with Intrepid through Asia and what I loved about the trip was that I never got lost or ripped off and that i could turn my brain off for the entire holiday, which is really important for me. Working in the travel industry and given the current cliamte where some internet travel providers are going tits up, its always reassuring to know you are booking with a licenced and bonded tour operator. Anyone who wants to buy Irish and keep our own lagging economy going can book Intrepid OUT Adventure tours through USIT (even if you are not a student or under 26) for the same price you see online.

You have a fair point Sue. These kinds of holidays can be expensive if they include entry into certain places but you're right, in the current climate it is steep

I had a pop over to the website and the prices as fecking mental. 14 day trip around Europe about €3000. I know they say that we have more disposable income but in this finacial climate I think not! I will be sticking to my Aerlingus cheap flight and my 5 star hotels, it works out cheaper anyhow!

Hi there Julie,
I'm not mad on package holidays either, I've never been on one, but this does interest me.

I'd say they will open out into new parts of the world if it all takes off, you're right, the states does seem like a likely destination - time will tell

It's always good to have the option of having your hols arranged by that kind of operator. Personally I don't like any package-type hols...I prefer to have the flexibility to go where I want and with who, that said I would try one of the hols..at least once! Surprised they don't do packages in the States since there are so many gay hotspots?!?

Hi there Stretch,
Thanks for your comment.
I'm wondering would you be interested in a company that matched a group of independant travellers together? I know someone who did that and loved it, not sure it's for me though :)

No, no, no - I couldn't be doing that. But then, I'm a weirdo, who particularly enjoys travelling alone....
