Young gay abandon

Coming to terms with being gay is tough. Not the gay part, the coming to terms part. Hey,  who am I talking to here? Y’all know of what I speak. But the times they are a changing. Check out the article from the Irish Times mag this week: here. I may be an ould softie but when I saw this, I actually got a lump in my throat.

It’s easy to think, “god they have it so good, it was so much harder when I was a kid” and maybe it was, but you wouldn’t wish that anguish on anyone. Coming to terms with being gay/bi/lesbian is still painful no matter what age you are. But no longer should anyone feel they are the only gay person in the world.

Part of the reason young people get to frolic in the Irish Times is because we, and those before us, suffered through those awful times.

That’s only a small part though, in the main it comes down to bravery. We were never as brave as they are. Some of us still aren’t.

You may be out to everyone you know but would you be brave enough to be photographed for a national newspaper? To put yourself out there to be ridiculed, jeered or worse when you go to college/school/work.

I take my hat off to those young people. I feel my age when I say “I’m delighted for you, g’wan and enjoy yourselves. Have a gay old time”.

As always, the pics (which have nothing to do with the ball and are used for illustritive purposes only), are used in good faith and without intending any infringement. If they need to come down, just let me know.
