Sweden removes transvestism from disease list

When I read the headline: “Transvestism no longer a disease in Sweden” my initial reaction was that this is a good thing, any law like this that moves us forward is a positive step towards equality.  However, then a second later I thought…. how the hell has it taken so long?

I always thought of Sweden as a forward thinking society, after all the Economist Intelligence Unit named it number one in it’s democracy index!  I know democracy is tough to define but this tells us that Sweden is by no way a backwards country.

So I’m left wondering why the trans community has had to wait till now to be told they don’t officially suffer from a disease!  It was 30 years ago that Sweden did the same for homosexuality, I can only imagine that that was relatively progressive on a world scale, so why wait this long to do the same for transvestism?  I just can’t fathom it.

The trans community have to put up with a lot of ignorance from society at large as well as from the LGBT community, lets face it, the T is uaually silent but to have to wait this long to be told you’re not suffering an illness is barbaric!

I just hope other countries follow suit and registers of illnesses can be moved out of the dark ages as soon as possible.
