U.S. Presidential Elections – the “ballot initiatives”
CBS News (think Katie Couric) provides us with a comprehensive state-by-state summary of some of the “ballot initiatives” – like referenda – which voters will be deciding on today, as well as the Presidential election.
[edit] My girlfriend and I are now ensconced on our couch, hopping through 24-hour news programmes, two laptops on the go, and an large bag of crisps at the ready.[/edit] I will try to update some of the headings of this list as the results are announced [use your refresh button!], for as long as I can stay awake..
I’ll also try to add in the Presidential election results beneath the list.

Well the same-sex marrage results are all ver depressing – can’t believe the bans were upheld!!!
Thanks for posting all of that – a great blog
Thanks, Carol. Just finished adding the latest info, and tidying it up a bit.
Yeah, I’m quite disappointed. It’s interesting to note that even where Obama won the presidential election, marriage bans were upheld by voters. It could indicate, therefore, the general opposition to equality for same-sex couples among Obama supporters.
I’ve no head for numbers or statistics, especially when it comes to election trivia, but I wonder will anyone break that down, either by inference or through exit polls. Must keep an eye on the interwebs for that.
I was watching the results of the ballot initiatives as eagerly as the presidential election. It is so disheartening to see four states affirm such regressive, anti-equality provisions in their constitutions. One issue I would like to see clarified is whether the initiatives met the quorum required. Florida requires 60% of voters to vote in favour of an initiative in order for it to pass. It was teetering at 59% for the first couple of hours but now seems set to carry at 62%.
One more ballot for the list above is Washington Initiative 1000: Allow Doctor-Assisted Suicide which is projected to pass. Currently, with 54% of precincts tallied, it stands at Yes: 59%; No: 41%.
With all of the excitement about Obama’s win and what a huge deal it is that America voted for a man of colour, it’s sobering to see homophobic prejudice writ large.
I had a feeling ‘we’ would lose the Propositions, but so heavily? It’s terrible and a real set-back for us.
It’s also sad to see Florida so passionately wording their Prop to include “or the substantial equivalent thereof”.
I’m so tired of right wing christians sprouting stuff in the media lately about how allowing gay marriage would seriously threaten the sanctity of “traditional marriage between men and women”, and “cause the fabric of our society to unravel.”
What do those phrases even mean? Its just vague, sensationalist crap that should not be printed.
Justify your objections with logical, specific reasons please.
Oh wait, these are religious crazies we are talking about. Sigh.
