10 days of Gaelife: Dec 21 to 31
Sunday, 21st December
Ah Christmas….a time of love and compassion, a time to take a moment to think about the world and those in it, to look beyond yourself and your agenda to see the good in all. Unless you’re the Pope of course. Then this is the perfect time to spread hatred and injustice around the world, all in the name of Jesus (who realy needs to work on his PR). Our friend Benny apparently thinks homosexuality is a “destruction of God’s work” and stated, “The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less.”
There was uproar of course, with people pointing out that the Pope was effectively giving people permission to hate. Merry Christmas.
In completely unrelated news…There was horror in California at the brutal gang-rape of a lesbian by four men aged from their teens to 30s.
Monday, 22nd December
There are interesting rumbles coming across the water as Arne Duncan is chosen by Barack Obama to take the role of Education Secretary. The Harvard man is seen as a maverick with his crazy belief in evolution and in protecting lgbt students from bullying. Time will tell just how much he can do but it’ll be fascinating to watch.
Another juicy appointment is Bill White to the Navy Secretary. Bill is openly gay and the Navy has a Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. Obama has always backed repeal of the policy, so the times they may be a changing.

The Spanish government seems to be taking gay rights seriously after a judge was suspended for trying to stop a lesbian from adopting her partner’s child.
Pity the same can’t be said for the people Solomon Islands where the government is trying to change the fact it is still illegal to be gay. The public, however, want none of it.

Peter Thatchell of Outrage is in the news today too, condenming the Pope’s comments.
Meanwhile, there is news that Juno star, and lesbian favourite, Ellen Page is to play one half of a lesbian couple in a new film. When the news got out, the internet was abuzz with the story. Lord how we needed something resembling good news.
So desperate in fact that lesbian action figures are in the news. Haven’t they been around for years?
Thursday, 25th December
Peter Thatchell is back in the news, Channel 4′s Alternative Christmas Message is the reason as it is, according to Thatchell, “an insult to murdered Iranians, gay and straight”.
Friday, 26th December
The San Francisco area is in shock after the gang-rape of one of their residents. They hold a vigil and leaflet the neighbourhood, desperately trying to being the rapists to justice.
There is also a call from Serbian gays for protection from online homophobia. The Queerria site has been inundated with violent comments. Facebook eventually removes them.
Today the gay community lost one of our more glamourous advocates when Eartha Kitt died at home in Connecticut at the grand old age of 81. RIP
In Uganda there is good news as lgbt activists win an historic court case. “This is a profound ruling that will limit police intrusiveness into the private lives of human rights defenders,” said Paula Ettelbrick, executive director at the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission.
Saturday, 27th December
There are rumblings in Azerbaijan when a Dutch lesbian couple adopt two Azerbaijani children. The Turkish government is in the thick of it, raking up all sorts of homophobia. Won’t someone please think of the children?
Obviously they need to read this report

Meanwhile, senior citizens in the UK’s Christian residential homes caused a fuss when they refused to tell a survey whether they were gay or straight.
Over in the states, a dating service, eHarmony, has been forced to add a gay option onto its website after losing a discrimination suit. Would you use it after that? Come on people, boycott!
Monday, 29th December
A lesbian couple who were denied permssion to ‘marry’ at a site owned by a religious group in New Jersey, won a case of discrimination following a law suit. However, it doesn’t end there. A judge will now have to decide whether the religious group should be forced to let the couple use the site.
Another group which doesn’t want us the virtual world of Playstation Home. Apparently, when finding like-minded gamers you cannot use the world lesbian, gay and/or bisexual. The company insist that this is just a first draft (or beta) edition of the game and things will change.
These people should read this report which states that if you treat kids like they’re not worth a damn, they’ll have low self-esteem and start to show anti-social behavior. El Papa, are you listening?
Tuesday, 30th December
In a rather odd case over yonder in Tennessee, a woman is fighting a legal battle to allow her partner of 10 years be allowed sleep over.
Wednesday, 31st December
There is disappointment when the UK’s Tory party omits lgbt people from its domestic violence plan. The party decide to go down the ‘we don’t mention them coz we don’t differenciate line.
And so begins another Celebrity Big Brother. This time round glamour model, Lucy Pinder, has claimed that she is looking for “girl-on-girl fun” in the house. People fail to care.
The year ended with a story which is becoming disturbingly familiar to gay people all over the globe, when four gay men were killed in their home in New Orleans. Plus ca change……
