Sexy Sports Ladies

So here at Gaelick we were trying to think of something to get us all through these rainy January days of busy work schedules and very little cash to treat ourselves with and we came up with the idea of trying to put together a list of the sexiest lady sports stars.  It was a tough job but I decided to volunteer, anything to help you all through these last winter weeks!!!

I have put together a list of 20 ladies I think fit the bill but, of course, this is just my opinion, we’d love to hear from you – who is here that’s not floating your boat and who should I be ashamed of omitting!!!

1.  Emma Byrne (Ireland & Arsenal Goalkeeper)

OK so I’m biased.  I’m a big Arsenal fan so of course I’m gonna put one of our players in.  It was tough picking just one, there are many sexy ladies that play for the unstoppable Arsenal Ladies but I just had to go for Emma.  I always thought she was hot on TV but last year I went to see the Irish Ladies team host the Arsenal Ladies (Emma played one half in each goal) and wow – she was amazing.  Not only one of the best players on the park but sexier in person than I could have dreamed of.  She has represented Ireland at every age level and now has over 60 senior caps to her name.  Her career highlight, however, must be winning the quadruple in 2007 when Arsenal Ladies won the league, FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.  Oh to meet this woman in person – swoon.

2.  Lorena Ochoa (Golf)

This sexy Mexican had no trouble making my list.  One of the highlights of any golfing tournament for many reasons.  Great player, great to look at, and in my humble opinion she has amazing “dyke potential”.  A real hottie.  Lorena turned pro in 2002 and has won many LPGA events since then beginning with the Franklin American Heritage in 2004 and including the British Open in 2007.  In 2008 she earned her place in the World Golf Hall of Fame and well deserved it was too.  a great competitor and a wonderful sports woman, Ochoa ticks all the boxes (*cough*)

3.  Martina Navratilova (Tennis)

Ah Martina, where would we be without you?  I had to include her as although she wouldn’t exactly do it for me, she is sexy – it has to be said.  She rocked on “I’m a Celeb” more than doing us lesbians proud.  I need not tell you her sporting achievements of course as this blog can only be so long, but what she has achieved on the court is matched by what she has done off it.  A true lesbian icon.

4.  Cora Staunton (GAA)

Can this woman play Gaelic football or what?  An amazing player who has featured on the Mayo Ladies Senior team since 1995.  She is one of the most admired players around and it’s easy to see why.  An incredible talent she’s a joy to behold on any football field.  I had the pleasure of seeing her live once and she really is something else.  A great ambassador for the sport and for women athletes everywhere.  This sexy lady had to make the list – no question.

5.  Katie Taylor (Boxing and Football)

What this woman has achieved is truly astonishing.  She is World Boxing Champion and, with female boxing on the cards for the London Olympics in 2012, she must be red hot favourite to add a gold medal to her already impressive collection of wins.  She really is a sensation in the boxing ring and not only that but plays football for the Irish team.  I mentioned before I saw Ireland play Arsenal ladies and Katie played that day, she was brilliant, I felt star struck to be honest.

6.  Sheryl Swoopes (Basketball)

Believe it or not Sheryl was the very first woman to be signed to the WNBL when it was created and is often called “the female Michael Jordan”.  She has won three Olympic Gold Medals.  In 2005 Swoopes became one of the most high profile athletes to come out and is very open about her relationship with her partner, Alisa Scott, with whom she is raising her son from a previous marriage.

She has also gone on to mentour a gay basketball team on TV where she spoke about coming out as well as her family and her faith, and of course, basketball.

7.  Tatiana Grigorieva (Pole Vaulter)

Tatiana had a marvelous 10 year career during which she won the Olympics, World Championship and Commonwealth games medals.  Born in Russia, she competed for Australia and it has to be said that she’s yummy.

8.  Milka Dunno (Car Racing)

Car racing is sexy all on it’s own but this lady ads to that with her own spiciness.  She’s fast and furious – I’d let her pick me up in that car and drive as fast as she likes – yum.

9.  Kelly Holmes  (Athletics)

Dame Kelly Holmes became a household names when she won two gold medals in the Olympics in 2004, she won the 800 and 1500 metre races and cemented her place in history.  Not only that but it has to be said that she’s a lovely lady to boot.  What a bod!!!

She went on, of course, to be made a Dame Commander (knighthood), and shall forever be a dame, how cool is that?

Kelly retired but can still be seen on shows like “Danicing on Ice”.

10.  Lokelani McMichael (Triathlon)

This lady does the triathlon for God’s sake – how fit is she?  She’s a bit on the thin side for me but she is sexy.  She’s the youngest female to finish the Hawaiian Ironman – now is that hot or is that hot???

11.  Mia Hamm (Football)

Born Mariel Margaret Hamm in Alabama, Mia went on to play Ladies football (Soccer) at the very highest level, appearing for the USA Ladies team andscoring more goals at international level than any other player – male or female.  She really is a legendof the game, perhaps that’s why I find her so sexy?  Being named FIFA Woman’s Player of the Year on two occasions is a great achievement and she has inspired a generation.  When the great Pele was asked to compile a list of the best 125 living players, Mia made the cut, what more can I say?

12 & 13.  Gro Hammerseng & Katja Nyberg (Handball)

I know it’s annoying when people make a couple one person so I’ve let them be 12 and 13 on my list, I just don’t want to have to pick which is sexier – it might cause a fight between them and I just couldn’t live with myself!!!

This couple are handball players (*snigger*), both of whom play for the Norwegian team – well they’d have to play for the same team, wouldn’t they!

14.  Gretchen Bleiler (Snowboarding)

Gretchen is one of the most accomplished female snowboarders in the world having won a silver medal in the Winter Olympics of 2006.  She is a pioneer of the sport and has won the FIS World Cup as well as many other titles.  She had 8 wins in a row in 2003 and in 2008 won the ESPY Award for best female action sports athlete.  She definitely has it going on – hot stuff.

15.  Malia Jones (Surfing)

Malia started to surf in her early teens and went on to win the US Ammeter Surfing Competition  when she was 15.  She was spotted by “Surfing Magazine” and was asked to model. She went on to be photographed for many publications including Sports Illustrated.  She has also gone on to star in many TV ads.

16.  Juli Furtado (Mountain Biking)

Juli is one of those natural sportswomen, she began as a skier and was even on the US team.  She began mountain biking in the 80′s and went on to win the cross country event in the very first official Mountain Biking World Championships.  She has also won the down-hill World Championship and the world Cup, and also participated in the Atlanta Olympics.  Juli has been inducted into both the US Bicycling Hall of Fame as well as the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

17.  Lauren Jackson (Basketball)

She’s from Oz and she’s very very tall. Laura was a prodigy in high school and went on to play in the American WNBL in 2001 for the Seattle Storm.  In 2003 she was voted the WNBL’s most valuable player.  She’s no fuddy-duddy either, posing nude in the US mag “Black + White” in a piece that featured Olympic athletes set to compete in Athens in 2004.

18.  Leryn Franco (Javelin)

This lady is extremly hot, it has to be said.  She’s not the most successful javelin thrower in the world, finishing 42nd in the 2004 Olympics, but she still has a lot to offer *cough*.

19.  Alison Fisher (Pool)

I was watching Pool on TV last year (yes, I’m that gay) and my best friend thought this women was hot stuff, so she goes on my list!  She’s a former professional Snooker player who has turned her hand to Pool.  She has won an amazing 11 World Titles and even entered the male rankings, although she never managed to progress.  Alison is often referred to as “the Duchess of Doom”!!!

20.  Swin Cash (Basketball)

If you want to go see a WNBL game, my advice is to go to see the Seattle Storm play.  I have just realised that Swin is the third woman off that team to make my list.  She made her name, however, playing in Detroit where she won the WMBL Championship in 2003.  She also won gold in the 2004 Olympics.
