caKe @ The Academy
Last Saturday a mate of mine and I headed down to The Academy on Abbey Street for the newest lesbian night on the town – caKe. I’d been meaning to go for months but every time it was on there seemed to be some family occasion or whatnot so I had never gotten the chance. This time around I had it in my diary well in advance and was looking forward to seeing what it was all about.
I’d heard good things about this event from friends and since it’s a fundraiser for Dublin Pride we handed over our mulla happy in the knowledge it was for a great cause. The staff at The Academy were great, the bouncers were actually polite and friendly – who knew that was possible???
The venue is made up of several rooms and caKe was held in the Green Room which I really liked. It was a nice size, holding around 550 people. The bar was well staffed and as you arrive in the door the lovely organisers of the night are there with free shots and cupcakes (before midnight), what more could you ask for?
There are two DJs who play one after the other, I really liked the music, great to dance to and it was done in a way that you could actually talk to the people you were with, or pop over to the large dance area for a bop. The night is advertised as a gay teadance but it wasn’t like any teadance I’ve ever heard of.
The ladies (and some men) who were there created a really great atmosphere, one in which everyone was out to have a good night and a laugh, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
In the downstairs room The Academy was hosting a fetish night so the queue for the ladies room was eclectic to say the least and this really added to the fun, who cares, atmosphere that everyone enjoyed.
So caKe gets the thumbs up from me, I’ll be there next month, dragging a few more mates with me too.
