LGBTQ ad pulled from super bowl programming
Although it’s not a very big sport over here we all knew the Super Bowl was on last weekend, it’s a massive sporting event taking the US over. I’m a lover of sport and all that it brings to people but I was very disappointed to read that KNBC had pulled a paid ad which was supporting gay marriage rights and showed a “gay family”.
The ad was produced by “get to know us first“, who say the reason they were given was that the NFL thought the ad was “advocacy”, however, they say that other such ads were shown during this time.
Get to know us firsts organiser is quoted as saying “We planned this buy weeks in advance and heard late Friday that the NFL rejected our ads because they violate the NFL’s no advocacy policy. I was truly stunned while watching the programming to see that they had selectively blocked our ads, while allowing other advocacy ads to air”.
This isn’t the first time the ad has run into some difficulty. KABC-TV had refused to run it during the Presidential Inauguration, however, after a meeting between GLAAD, gettoknowusfirst.org and the station manager and general director, the station agreed to run it during primetime.
Whatever the reason I find the whole thing very distasteful. The Super Bowl is watched by millions and pulling the ad really makes a statement that they don’t want to show us during so called family events. Why not show a gay family to everyone, what’s wrong with that? Free speech anyone!!!
