Review:Queer Spraoi
Seomra Spraoi has been all over the place recently – literally, like the nomadic little anarchist play pen it is, it swaps locations regularly due to various troubles, funding and the like. But it’s a vital part of the city’s otherwise over commercialised collection of social venues.
After Queer Spraoi’s launch night last month, it hopes to host a more regular get together, and they really probably should because there’s no other gay night like this in the city, or perhaps the country. Operating on a sort of mix of film screening, hang out spot, house party, disco vibe, it is, if anything eclectic.
Located in a gaff in Bevedere Court off Gardiner Street, it’s a gig venue, a dance floor, a makeshift cinema and a place to just mingle and chill and have a few beers. Pitched to include ladies & genderfuckers, deviant boi’s and grrrl’s, queers, queens, trannies, grannies genderqueers, dykes, fags, faeries, femme’s, crossdressers, crips, crutch’s, butterflies, Butch’s, bears, sissies, pansies, dandies, tom boi’s, poly chufters, the crowd can largely be summed up as alterno-gay or indie gay, a nice mix of friendly creative people.
It’s very non-Dublin (or perhaps that’s wrong, maybe it’s showing the city for what it is becoming) and perfectly timely in a recession, as the bring your own booze rule illustrates. Recalling the night? There was dancing, and mingling with some ThingBox boys, and bumping into various gays that I knew, and realising that this is definitely the spot for the artistic gays, not that it’s particularly intimidating if you’re not part of the crowd.
There was leaning against the sink watching people dance, eating cupcakes, laughing at the stall toilet in the back yard, helping someone with a ladder for some reason, and giving whatever donation you can at the door.
It was, in short, lovely. Looking forward to the next one.

Oh fabulous! I heard – somwhere, a blog I think, that rhymes with “Nuala’s Socks” – about the Nouveau Vadge (wa-wa) night this Friday, which I’ll miss, so a regular fixture sounds great. (I’ve been having trouble keeping up with Seomra Spraoi’s peripatetic existence of late..!)
Ta for the tip, lady, and welcome!
I’ve heard really good things about the inaugural Queer Spraoi night and was sorry to miss it. I’m definitely going to do my damnedest to make it to the next one. Also, I just heard via Queer Spraoi on Fakebook that there’s 1). a general meeting tonight (Feb 25th) at 6.30pm in Seomra Spraoi for anyone interested in getting involved in the organisation of future Queer Spraoi events; and 2). there will be a Queer Ball (woop!) in Seomra Spraoi on March 28th. Hot damn!
And what’s this Nouveau Vadge event? Sounds intriguing…
