AMI:BonSoir Gaelick…this is YuriVision calling…

Hello everyone!

I was asked to do a wee blog for Gaelick (which I am honoured to be asked to do) about my entry into this year’s Alternative Miss Ireland. A few ideas were put to me..and one of the questions I suppose I could start off with is:

Well, what drives someone to parade themselves in front of a thronged gaggle of gays in the Olympia?

I came from a performing background and over the years performed in various guises in many different productions…even as far as being a model in a campaign for a Pregnancy Crisis organisation…the irony!

Over the years, I suppose like a lot of people, I have settled down somewhat-working full time and paying the mortgage. The acting/performing bug has never left me, in fact I feel more drawn to it than ever. My job is a pretty serious one and a chance to do AMI and have that creative outlet is a special one.

AMI is hard to describe, but I will try my best. It’s a show like no other. It gives a performer a chance to be creative, really creative, maybe even a bit bonkers! Anyone can enter, yet there is a misconception out there the show is for the guys, which couldn’t be further from the truth. I do think that there are very few individual women performing out there and would be great to see many more participate. The crowd are unique-a wonderful mis-mash of everything on the scene-gay men, lesbians, bi, cross dressers, trans…I could go on. But it is wonderful to have such a unique crowd, who really understand the show is truly alternative. There will be something for everyone in the audience.

My act is called YuriVision and yes, you’ve guessed it, it is all about Eurovision. I am a huge Eurovision fan and came up with the idea of a character who is all about Eurovision. I think Eurovision is universally loved (come on, admit it!) especially in the gay community. I was lucky enough to travel to Serbia last year and was amazed at just how many gay and lesbians there were at the event. It is said AMI is gay Christmas, I think Eurovision must by Gay Hannukah!!!

Firstly, to gain a place in AMI, I needed to make a video entry, which I had great fun doing and luckily enough gained a spot in this year’s competition. If you would like to view it, you can find it here-

My character is French and loves all things Eurovision and of course the ladies! I started off performing Yuri a few years ago and won a competition in the now defunct bar Yello and went on to do a few other shows. I think Yuri is a great character-it is traditional that the gay guys love Eurovision and I think it is a twist to have a gay woman perform a character such as YuriVision. Maybe, I’m being too political here, but here it goes…
I do think there can be a divide between gay men and women. For a gay woman to be performing a Eurovision act at AMI, I think will bridge a gap…or if not, we can all have a good sing song at least!!!

My overall motive is to have fun and enjoy the night and try and get people to come on a mad Eurovision journey! I do think the act will be entertaining and will hopefully go down well.

Preparations are in full swing and have a lot to do over the next few days on the run up to the event. I will pop my head in and give you an idea of how I am getting on. If you can’t get to read more here, I will see you at the Olympia on Sunday and be sure to give Yuri your douze points!xx
