Musak: Telepathe
“Dance Mother” by Telepathe • (released 26 January 2009)
Slightly late in mentioning this band, Telepathe has evolved over a number of years from various musical projects out of Brooklyn’s avant garde, artsy scene – the same Brooklyn which has also bestowed us with the likes of Joan As Police Woman and MGMT . The band has therefore seen changes in its cast and crew, but always around the originators and constant members, Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudais. In the past a rosemantic couple, and now muscial duo, Gagnes has said of her bandmate, “It’s one of the most important relationships I’ve ever had.”
Their debut album, “Dance Mother”, was produced by none other than Dave Sitek, of TV on the Radio fame, and contains a collection of electronic off-beat compositions and otherworldly narratives. They could be labelled as something like dark shoe-gaze electronica meets interesting beats, but let’s not.
Their sounds are intense, with over-layered chants and sometimes eerie vocals. With each listen, I find something new to appreciate. Their songs are intriguing and, I find, leave you eagerly awaiting the next release. Livaudais describes the band’s themes: “Crimes and killings, blood, dying and being in love… the usual.” Honestly, check them out!
