Celebrating the Role of Gay Carers
Families come in all shapes and sizes and more and more people are looking at their options when it comes to starting a family. Many couples and single people consider fostering or adopting so I was delighted to hear that the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) are holding a conference in London on the 11th of May 2009 entitled “Sharing evidence, overcoming resistance – celebrating the role of lesbian and gay carers”.
It’s great to see them working on getting more LGBTQ people involved as many may be under the misunderstanding that they are not welcome to foster. We recently had an interview with two Irish foster cares who found that their sexuality wasn’t a problem so getting the word out to people is important and you can see more information here.
I think it’s great that organisations like the IFCO and BAAF are taking the initiative and trying to get more LGBTQ people to think about fostering, which I’m sure you all agree is very worthwhile. So if you’re interested in getting more information on this subject you can have a look at their websites and if anyone goes to either conference please let us know what you thought. Were your questions answered and did you get the information you felt you needed?
