“Marriage Matters” conference: Thursday, 7th May 2009
Hot on the heels of the momentum created by LGBT Noise’s rally on Sunday, a symposium on extending marriage rights for same-sex couples is taking place in a couple of weeks, on Thursday, 7th May 2009.
The full title of the conference is the trip-off-the-tongue, “Marriage Matters for Lesbian and Gay People in Ireland: Social and Legal Perspectives” (mm, sounds fun..!) and it’s taking place in the Westbury Hotel, Grafton St, Dublin 2, from 10am-4pm.
Despite the soporific name, there are some muchos interesting headline acts attending, including:
- Alejandro Alder, International and Human Rights Co-ordinator, FELGTB;
- Patricia Prendiville, former Executive Director ILGA-Europe, 2004-2008;
- Professor Sheila Greene, Director, Children’s Research Centre, Trinity College Dublin;
- Peter Tatchell, Human Rights Campaigner, Gay Rights Activist, Writer;
- Niall Crowley, former CEO Equality Authority and Equality Expert
There will also be panellists, including Grainne Healy (Co-Chair, MarriagEquality) who spoke at Sunday’s rally; Brian Sheehan (CEO, GLEN); LGBT Noise, go team!; Dundalk OUTcomers; Platform for Equality.

The National Lesbian and Gay Federation (NLGF) with the support of the Equality Authority are holding a National Symposium: ‘Marriage Matters for Lesbian and Gay People in Ireland: Social and Legal Perspectives‘.
Symposium Aim
To provide a forum for the exchange of information and for dialogue between interested LG national organisations, community groups and individuals, as well as legal, equality and human rights professionals, and all those advocating for change on the issue of lesbian and gay marriage, subsequent to the introduction of civil partnership legislation.Who should attend?
The symposium will be of particular interest to lesbian and gay equality advocates and activists; politicians; policy makers; legal practitioners; community and social work professionals; trade unionists; and all those interested.This event will take place on Thursday 7th May 2009 in the Westbury Hotel, Grafton St, Dublin 2, from 10am – 4pm.
The symposium is a follow-up activity to the European Year of Equal Opportu nities for All (2007).
