I’m getting excited, the evenings are getting longer, the sun is trying it’s best to warm us up and the summer is almost upon us.  For me the summer means three things, work gets really quiet, my birthday and most importantly gay Christmas!

Pride will take place on June 27th this year and I can’t wait.  I volunteer for pride and I can assure you lots of work has already gone into making this year’s the best yet.  Unfortunately, our efforts to have the post parade party in a larger venue have not worked out so we’ll be back in the civic offices but pride is what we make it and I have no doubt that the community will come out in force and make the party a wonderful event.

Of course pride isn’t just one day, it’s a 10 day festival that includes a ceili, a pub quiz, an evening of remembrance as well as many many nights out, including the dyke night. As I’m sure you know the ladies who organise cake are pride volunteers and kindly put a lot of time and energy into cake which is a pride fundraiser.  Congrats and many thanks to them for everything they do.

So what does pride mean to you?

Is it a political event, a party, a chance to fight for equality, a time to walk down O’Connell Street with all your mates shouting?  Do you go to the parade or watch taking some pics?  Do you go to anything other than the parade?

For me, it’s about spending time with my friends and being – well – proud! I love walking the parade route with flags and banners and I love listening to Panti in the after party, it just makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

If you want to volunteer for pride you can do so by looking at the website, we’re always in need of more people.  You can volunteer as much or as little as you choose.  If all you want to do is be a stewart for the parade or perhaps work at the pride point for a few hours then that’s wonderful, if you want to put in a little more time then the more the merrier.

Of course there are many pride parades and events around the county, it’s a great time to enjoy all of the celebrations and well done to everyone who is working hard behind the scenes.
