Top Gal Kelly McGillis Comes Out

Sleb gossip sites were aflutter today with news that 51-year old actor, Kelly McGillis has come out.

Speaking of a lifelong struggle with her sexuality with SheWired.com ‘Girl Rock’ vlogger, Jennifer Corday, McGIllis said “life is a freaking journey, and it’s about growing and changing, and coming to terms with who and what you are, and loving who and what you are.” McGillis may be best known generally for playing opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun, Harrison Ford in Witness, and Jodie Foster in The Accused. However, many in the sapphic sorority will recognise her from her recent appearance in season 5 of The L Word as closeted military Colonel Gillian Davis prosecuting a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” case against Captain Tasha Williams. McGillis speaks candidly in the SheWired.com vlog about the journey which has led her to coming out at this point in her life. The twice-divorced mother-of-two said of her romantic relationships with men “I did that, I need to move on in life. That’s another part of being true to yourself…that’s been a challenge for me personally.” She goes further to reveal that coming out and accepting her sexual identity has been a life-long work-in-progress: “I think that accepting my homosexuality was an ongoing process from the time I was about 12. I had a lot of things happened that convinced me that God was punishing me for being gay. That was a hard process.”

Kudos, Ms. McGillis! We wish her well in this new, out chapter in her life. Oh, and before you ask, she is single.
