Campaign for Real Beauty
I’m sure you’ve all seen the campaign for real beauty in ads for Dove products. I’m a big fan of the idea, it’s about time companies used “real women” in their ads rather women who are unbelievably thin. The reasons for this are well documented, it puts pressure on women, especially young girls, to be obsessed with their weight. So having ads which show women who are more like the rest of us is great, after all, women are beautiful in all shapes and sizes.
However, is it just me or are the women in these ads really thin too? I mean they may be a size 10 rather than a size 6 but they’re still such slimmer and ripped than most of us. Why can’t they have a few size 14′s and dare I say it an 18?
I was going home on the bus the other day and I saw an ad with a woman on the side of a bus, and fair enough, she wasn’t the usual rake but she had a great figure and I just think the ad would be better if they had a real “real woman” rather than someone who is still quite slim.
Am I alone in this? Am I being one of those who sees a problem in everything, should I shut up and see this as a step in the right direction? Or would you agree that a campaign for real beauty should have women, and indeed men, who are more representative of the “average woman” and the wonderful range of beauties out there?

Well I’m pretty cynical about the whole thing, using real women to sell us beauty products because while we’re perfect the way we are, we’re still not quite perfect enough so use Dove moisturiser….
It would be much more groundbreaking if they weren’t making a big deal out of it and just used ordinary sized women in their ads and didn’t draw huge attention to it.
thanks for the comment Slayer.
I have to agree, if there was less attention on it it would be better.
Do you think the women in the ads are a step in the right direction or just “less skinny”?
I’m with ya Gooner. These women, while gorgeous, aren’t large. They are all smaller then the average woman.
Being a rather curvaceous lady myself, I’m always delighted to see the odd round belly and pair of real hips. Having said that, Dove is making this into a bit of a freak show.
“Oh look at the fatties! They care how they look too! Isn’t that cute”
Feck off!!
I think it’s a good campaign I just think if you’re gonna do something do it right. I’d imagine a size 14-16 would be average enough so have models in or around that
