Heineken Cup Final 09
I’m back from gorgeous Scotland having been over for the Heineken Cup Final last weekend, and what a weekend it was. I went with my sister and we had a wonderful time. Due to popularity the flights were far too expensive so we opted for the ferry and that turned out to be the best craic ever.
We left my place at 3.40am and drove up to Larne in the north where we got a ferry to Troon at 7am, I highly recommend this mode of transport, it was brill. The view was gorgeous and you can walk about and relax, unlike on a plane. For our trip the whole boat seemed to be full of Leinster fans so it really made the atmosphere enjoyable. When you get there you have your car, it’s just great.
We arrived at our hotel in Glasgow and dumped our bags. We stayed in Glasgow even though the match was in Edinburgh because Edinburgh was booked solid. The train is every 15 mins though and only takes 45 mins so it was great. The whole city of Edinburgh was taken over by rugby fans and the craic was mighty. The Scottish people are so lovely (my knees went weak a million times due to the ascent) and we were all made feel right at home. The stadium (Murrayfield) is about 2 miles outside but we walked along with everyone else singing Molly Malone and the Boys in Blue, there didn’t seem to be a Leicester fan in sight, the city was blue.
When we got there it was electric, our seats were right in line with the try line and not too high. The organisers did a great job and the stage was set for a classic. It was strange, the whole match seemed to last about 10 mins, it just flew! It was back and forth but we deserved to win, it was fabulous to be there to see them get the trophy and my brother-in-law text to say we were on the telly!
So we’re champions of Europe having beaten Quinns, Munster and Leicester to do it, talk about having to beat the best.
The city was buzzing all night and we actually managed to stay up till 1am, which I think must be a world record considering we were up at 3am! Everyone was in great form and the trip home was even more fun the trip over.
I really recommend getting the ferry to Scotland and congrats to the Leinster and Leicester players for giving us a great match.
Leinster are champions of Europe, I still can’t believe it. This means the European Cup has been in Ireland for two years in a row and having done the grand slam I think it’s safe to say it’s a great time for Irish Rugby – bring on next season.
