[...] Well did you see us? You couldn’t have missed us, our t-shirts were blindingly pink and our banner was fabulous What a great Dublin Pride. Rumour has it it was the biggest so far with around 12,000 people turning out in all their gay attire. We had an amazing time and hope you did so too. For a change, it wasn’t the weather putting a dampener on things, but the governement with the annoucement that the civil partnership bill was “not a stepping stone to marriage”.
Hi Sean, and many thanks for the comment. Just recovering from the madness of Dublin Pride, so will have to reply in a bit more detail later..! I've amended the post to reflect who said what in the quoted passages. Thanks for the tip!

This is good news and progress of a sort, but I'm still really sore about how we were treated and how often this measure was announced/ re-announced/ heralded/ promised by the government. That sort of political shenanigans doesn't impress me as a citizen of this Republic. The govt created and broke its own promises, it was a bit like the way it behaved about decriminalisation legislation, and I thought they were a bit more 'evolved' about sex. I do want to examine the details and read more before making more comments about the Bill. I think it will be interesting, when it comes to the Dail/ Seanad debate, as to what the movers and shakers and the backbenchers of all persuasions think about same-sex relationships, etc., as it will be a watershed moment to gauge opinions almost a generation on from the 1993 decriminalisation legislation.

But just to be *really* clear about discourse (who said what) at this time, I take it that the last 'pasted' quote (above) is from McGahan and not Deputy Dermot Ahern? Could that be cited *more explicitly* as it is a crucial instance of an 'anti gay' position, and it should be a measure of how opinion has changed...thanks.

Well at least that rubbish sentiment from the Minister should help to ensure that the momentum for civil marriage does not falter after this development...
