Anybody Seen My Disco Stick?

Jul 20th, 2009 | By Annie Aura | Category: Music

Just in case you are one of the few who haven’t been drawn into the crazy world that belongs to Lady Gaga (and to her alone, it seems) then I invite you to read on. The Lady Gaga world is an incredibly well manufactured product, from the crazy videos (see Paparazzi) to the bizarre interviews( see Johnathan Ross), the ridiculous get-ups (any photo) to the polished beats, synths and vocals on “The Fame”.

Gaga’s debut album promises a great deal after the singles “Pokerface” and “Paparazzi” became entwined in the synapses of every pop fan’s brain due to the huge amount of airplay. “Just Dance” was the first single, the song which, I won’t say “catapulted” (the video has been on youtube since May 2008!) directed an increasing amount of attention to The Lady Gaga world. It’s catchy with a killer beat and fills the floor, what more can you ask for, eh Madonna?

The rest of the album blows hot and cold. “Love Game” opens with the lyric “Let’s have some fun, this beat is sick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick”. If you haven’t smashed your cd player/iPod at this point then you’ll enjoy a smooth, laid-back clubbing vibe. This laid-back clubbing vibe continues over a few tracks and begins to get a bit wearisome. Oddly interspersed at Track 6 is Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) which is something that might have been borne of a mating between Ace of Base and The Vengaboys, very europop. “Brown Eyes” is a suprising addition, a piano-led ballad which still can’t escape the beat and the synth and makes for an intriguing but welcome mix.

On first listen, the album is very enjoyable but after the third listen it begins to sound too repetitive. We are already very well accustomed to Gaga’s best writing (the singles) and if you like those then go ahead and get the album. If, however, you like the singles because you have no choice in the matter then maybe give this one a miss. No matter which side of the fence you’re on the Lady Gaga machine is well-oiled and will be around for a while yet!

Lady Gaga’s album, “The Fame” is available on 7digital now and all good record stores.

  • The morning after I wrote this review I woke up with one of those infernally catchy beats running through my head.
