Ireland’s athletes journey to World OutGames 2009

outgames-2009-logo-2The sporting theme continues apace, with this year’s OutGames taking place from this weekend in Copenhagen.

And Ireland’s very own LGBT competitors will be taking place, with several athletes representing OutInIreland.

OutInIreland is was conceived as a network to bring GLBT men and women together around a particular sporting interest or activity. Founder Frank Kelly originally set up Out4Tennis, a network of GLBT tennis players from around Ireland that come together on a regular basis for tournaments and ‘meets’. Currently OutInIreland comprises three networks: Out4Tennis, Out4Badminton, In4Squash and OutRowers. There are hopes to build further network – such for as Gaelic games, hockey, and other team sports – once the critical number of members has been reached.

We’ll be keeping an eye on our athletes’ performance, and hope to have a review of how they fared when they return.

UPDATE (8pm):
From ILGA-Europe:

Prior to OutGames and its International Human Rights Conference in Copenhagen in the end of this month where ILGA-Europe take part, we published a map of Europe reflecting the legal situation for lesbian, gay and bisexual people

View the map here.

The World OutGames 2009 takes place from Saturday, 25th July 2009 until the closing events on Sunday, 2nd August 2009

  • Good luck indeed! Here’s hoping, out of the thousands of participants, they do well.

And to yourself, Susan. Cologne, you say? I hear that’s supposed to be a lovely city. (Didn’t they host Europride a few years back? Or was that just a regular Pride event?)

I say we should mobilise a whole gaggle of fans to travel there and support Team Ireland!

(Oh yeah, The Guardian have a good, concise article about this year’s Games, here.)

Saturday 12 March – Saturday 19 March 2011, Wellington, New Zealand
The 2nd AsiaPacific Outgames in Wellington, New Zealand, will be a full-throttle week of sports competition, cultural events, spectacular shows, must-go parties, and a human rights conference programme with national and international speakers!
Join more than a thousand lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people to participate in this unique event.
2011 will be an ideal time for those living overseas to visit New Zealand, and for offshore kiwis to make the trip home. And there’s plenty of time for you to plan what part of the Outgames you’ll be a part of! Registrations open in 2010.

Enough time to organise a bigger Irish contingent.
