Two women celebrate 70 years together

Caroline Leto and Venera Magazzu from Dania Beach Florida have made my day, they are celebrating their 70th anniversary. After listening to people on the radio and reading articles in the papers about how marriage is a sacrament and all that, reading about these ladies is like a breath of fresh air.

Reading their interview with the Miami Herald you can’t help but smile;

”We’re not going to have a party,” said Magazzu, 97, insisting they are too old for such things.

”Oh yes we are,” responded Leto, 96, who noted the two can still polka. “This is a big one.”

It’s nice to know that couples like this are out there. You don’t have to be a mathematician to work out that they started their relationship in the 30′s and that couldn’t have been easy, we think we have it hard now!

lesbianmarriageI think there is an idea out there that lesbian relationships can’t last past a certain sell by date. Couples like this put pay to notions like that and I’m grateful for them. There are, and have been, many couples like Ms Magazzu and Ms Leto out there but they lived in secret as so many gay people did so there isn’t much documentation. I firmly believe that in 70 years from now this won’t be such a big story and that 70 years after that it won’t be a story at all.

This is my favourite part of their interview

In 2006, as age slowed them down a bit, Magazzu put their story in a self-published book called An Unadulterated Story: Young and Gay at 90.
During a reporter’s recent visit, the two quibbled over where they had last seen a copy. Magazzu insisted it was in a bedroom. Leto said she saw it in the trunk of their car.
”OK, so if you know where everything is, then you look for it,” Magazzu huffed as she turned her head toward the kitchen.
Leto smiled. “Cute, isn’t she?”

  • 70? Jaysus! I’d be happy to live to 70 let alone having someone to be 70 with.
