Hell no: Cardinal Seán Brady and civil partnership

I’m sorry.. Last time that I checked, I was sure that Seán Brady was not an elected representative of this country, nor is he a member of government. And yet, he seems to think that he can stick his oar in concerning how the law of the land is shaped to deal with recognition of same-sex couples and their families.

Now, I’m not happy with the proposed civil partnership legislation for a number of different reasons. The issue here, however, is that this appointed cleric thinks that he can interfere and meddle in affairs of State. What next? Discussions on the implementation of Sharia into domestic law? Influencing government policy with Rabbinical teachings? The Zen of drafting legislation? (In fact, I’m quite sure that he and his cohorts would be very happy with all of that – as they have already said so in the context of the UK.)

cardinal-sean-bradyWell, Brady, you can keep your bloody crosier to yourself. Brady even had the horrific nerve to talk about “ideal environment in which to raise children.” After how the Roman Catholic church has behaved in this country – and around the world – since god-knows-when, most recently highlighted in the Ryan Report on sexual and physical violence against children: that organisation has no authority whatsoever to make ANY statements concerning the best interests of children.

colm-ogormanPanti, on her blog, made her feelings on this subject known on the same day as Brady’s comments. Today, she directs us towards a thoroughly cogent and concise rebuttal of all of the spurious arguments made by the likes of not only Seán Brady, but also Minister Ahern and anti-equality commentators.

It’s by Colm O’Gorman in today’s Evening Herald, and is compelling. I dare anyone to try to counter his argument.

  • I think Mr O’Gorman’s article is excellent.
I am so proud of community for our approach to this. We could sling a lot of mud at the church when it comes to the concept of ‘caring for children’ but we’re rising above and stating the facts, not lowering ourselves to their level of hate-speak
