Alainn or Appalling: Pink
Is there a god(dess) of lesbians? Some say there is. Proof? Pink (and Ellen). Ok so she’s not a lesbian, but Pink is exactly what young women need to see; a woman who is not ashamed of her sexuality and not shy to admire the beauty of either gender.
Who wouldn’t love someone who snogged Kristanna Loken (left) and then told the press “feck off, sure isn’t she only gorgeous and wouldn’t ya given the chance”? Ok I may be paraphrasing.
Like Angelina, Pink’s raw sexuality can been seen as quite masculine; it can be aggressive and ‘in your face’, something good girls aren’t supposed to be. It is something we need to see more. Why should girls and women not be more assertive about their basic needs and desires? I await the day that ‘good girl’ pressure is buried deep in it’s own passive aggressive rot.
But enough intellectualising. Alecia Beth Moore is hot. Sweaty, sexy, smoldering hot. She has a body to die for and a voice that sounds like she’s smoked too much while downing enough whiskey to make an Irish woman proud. It actually comes from having asthma as a child, but the Janis Joplin growl has become one of her trademarks. Plus she’s as cheeky as any chappie and has brains to burn.
Born to a nurse mother and Vietnam vet dad, young Alecia got her love of music from her father who played guitar and sang. Indeed, she was grounded as a child for watching MTV, her parents thought the channel was inappropriate for children. The young girl was in bands as soon as she went to school and, when she was just 14, was performing in clubs in her home-state Philadelphia.
There are many stories explaining her nickname. Some say it’s because she goes pink with embarrassment so easily, another that, when she was at school someone pulled down her trousers and she went pink. Then there is the theory that she called herself after Mr Pink in Reservoir Dogs or even that she got it from friends at school because she was such a tomboy and calling her Pink had an ironic twist.
Whatever the reason, the young Pink was skating, singing and doing gymnastics to her heart’s content, when, just 16 she joined the R&B Atlanta-based trio, Choice. They were signed to LaFace Records but never released any records. When they split, Pink stayed on as a solo artist and, in 2000, released her first solo album, Can’t Take Me Home. It sold over five million copies and a star was born.
Before, I wanted to throw my success in the face of every teacher who told me I wouldn’t be shit. Now it’s ‘I’m so happy I can do what I love and not answer to some asshole boss.’ If not for music, I’d be in trouble all the time. Music saved my life. It still does. This album saves me.
She was unhappy, though, with the lack of creative control she had when making Can’t Take Me Home, and was determined not to be a ‘cookie cutter’ pop star. So, in 2001, she released her more pop rock-oriented second album, Missundaztood.
She had been a fan of Four Non-Blondes as a teen, so she recruited the former-singer Linda Perry to write with her. Perry said that Pink opened up to her and would just sit behind the piano and sing. Pink moved into Perry’s Los Angeles home where the pair spent several months writing songs for the album. It went gold or platinum status in more than 20 countries, selling over 13 million records and winning two Grammys. Not bad for an album the studio didn’t like. It wasn’t the sales or the accolades that meant the most.
Know what was the best thing that happened to me the entire year? A 45-year-old woman and her daughter came up and it was the mother who wanted an autograph. She told me how I had helped her through her divorce, and how she and her daughter both loved my music and how sharing that had saved their relationship. That’s more than I can do for myself.
During this time, Pink met and started dating Corey Hart, a pro motocross driver. She asked him to marry her, in 2006, and the pair were happy for a few years. Mainly because she was touring all the time, according to Pink.
In 2003, after touring the world, Pink release Try This which wasn’t as successful as her previous two albums. Having said that, it still won her a Grammy and sold in the millions.
I decided at 15 that I didn’t want to be one of those artists that gets up and sings love songs they don’t mean. I decided that I was going to be me to the fullest extent, that my songs were going to reflect relationships I’ve had, things I’ve been through, and even the stuff I’m embarrassed about.
[Our generation] never had to fight for anything. It shows in the music; its just surface music. I want to open up minds, break stereotypes–in music, sex, everything. The world is ready to grow up.
Her fourth album, I’m Not Dead, was released in 2006 and catapulted her into the top of the charts again with hits like Stupid Girls, Who Knew” and U + Ur Hand. Off she went on tour again and wowed all over the world. Remember her in Malahide Park on the day of Pride? Wow!
In November 2008, Funhouse debuted at number one on the ARIA charts, certified two times platinum and selling over 86,000 units in its first week. She then went on one of the largest tours in the history of….touring, starting in France on February 24 and continuing through Europe until mid-May, then heading down to Australia.
Meanwhile, in the land of love, Carey Hart revealed in an interview for SpeedFreaks that he and Pink were ‘dating’ in March 2009. Pink herself has said that they never divorced and are going to marriage counselling to sort things out.
Bán-dearg isn’t just vocal on the bould stage either. She wears her political heart on her sleeve supporting PETA (she’s a veggie) as well as Human Rights Campaign, ONE Campaign, Prince’s Trust, New York Restoration Project, Run For The Cure Foundation, Save the Children, Take Back the Night, UNICEF and World Society for the Protection of Animals. Phew! When does she get time to sing?
All this and those abs too.

Ah, go on then. She’s álainn.
I don’t get it and I never have.
She’s totally a made up character and I just don’t see how she’s attractive.
I will bow to the majority but I have to vote appaling on this one
Alainn, alainn, alainn. The most natural (and beautiful) personality in pop music at the moment.
The woman is ridiculously gorgeous, aesthethically and in her personality. Love her!
That has to be a trick question. Alainn and I want to be a rope on her tour.
lol! “[...] and I want to be a rope on her tour.”
Best line ever, Julie!
Why thank you! I’m totally serious though!
Gorgeous. Looking forward to June ’10 in the O2.
