From the Mouths of Babes

josie_largeThe Romero family are living the American dream. Mom and Dad were both in the military when they gave birth to their gorgeous daughter, Josie (left). Josie, however, was born in a boy’s body and the family raised her as a boy for the first years of her life. When she was a toddler and wanted to dress as a girl and play girls’ games, they let her, thinking it was a phase and kids will be kids.

It was when Josie was able to express herself, at around four years-of-age, that she started to correct people and tell them, “No, I’m a girl”. It took a while but her parents realised that she wasn’t joking or playing, she was serious. They brought her to see her doctor and he told them to look up with word ‘transgender’. This incredibly supportive family saw Josie for who she is and, by the time she reached the age of six, Josie was beginning her transition to becoming physically female.

Josie’s parents Vanessa and Joseph from Vail, Arizona, are bravely telling their daughter’s story in order to help other parents with transsexual children. This story was the subject of a National Geographic TV documentary called “Sex, Lies, and Gender” and, as “Body Shock” it will be shown tomorrow on Channel 4.

Even though things at home were great, Josie had a tough time with bullies. Her mother, Vanessa,  says that she was constantly harassed and verbally and physically abused by her classmates. One school even banned her from enrolling. Things were so difficult that they  decided to school her at home.

We feel that by being open about her experiences, it will help other parents and children still coming to terms with their gender. The most important thing is to love your child unconditionally. Whatever happens you still have a daughter, or a son, who needs you to be there for them.

Such a simple truth, which is still so hard for some to understand.

  • My brother is FTM trans in Arizona.. He knows this family.
The C4 show used ALL the wrong pronouns constantly and im sure that the Nat Geo is no better. To the best of my knowledge the family are suing.
    Josie is awesome!!!!!

  • Josie is awesome, Leo. An inspiration.
I am so disappointed in C4 and Nat Geo, though. Wasn’t this supposed to be informative? Not using the correct pronouns is, at best, lazy journalism but, at worst, perpetuating the misunderstands surrounding trnssexuality.
