Spice @ The Dragon
For almost a year and a half, Spice was held every Saturday in Spy Bar. It was a hugely popular, mixed night, which fell by the way-side for almost a year from July 2008. Spice’s reincarnation occurred about 6 months ago in its new home of The Dragon, and is on every Friday with music from DJs Paddy Scahill, Ruth and Davina Devine.
A couple of weeks ago, this writer decided to try Spice out for the first time since its move to Dragon. After getting over the initial indignation at being asked to pay into a bar, I entered The Dragon expecting to at least find something slightly different than one would on any other night…alas, this was not the case. The only differences I could spot were that the curtains which separate the booths had been lifted up (presumably to create an aura of space), and that the balcony overlooking the main bar was covered over.
The group I was with ordered their drinks, which were expensive as always. However, they were delighted to receive some free drinks, as there was some Gin promotion on that night.
The downstairs dance floor was pumping out very intense dance music, so we carried on up the stairs to a second dance floor, which was being DJ’d by one of Dublin’s best known drag queens, Davina Devine.
Here, the music was more relaxed, way more old-school and far better for a chilled-out dance, and the dance floor was soon hopping. Unfortunately, as the night went on it became almost uncomfortably crowded. We tried to make it into the smoking area to grab some fresh air, but it was too jammed out there to actually move…so a hasty retreat was made back to the bar to find some space (and more free drinks if there was any!!)
Upon arriving downstairs again, we were greeted with the sight of two dancers gyrating at either end of the bar, wearing next to nothing. Personally, I found that to be quite off-putting, but some people seemed to be getting into it. The Spice crowd was mostly male dominated, but there were a few women dotted throughout the bar.
Although it wouldn’t be my favourite place to go, it is an experience nonetheless, and this writer would give it a 2 out of 5.
The Dragon is located at 64/65 South Great Georges Street. To get more information on Spice or about The Dragon bar in general, go to http://thedragon.eu/
