Better Parenting

mothersBirkbeck College and Clark University in Massachusetts have carried out research which suggests that since same sex couples have to make an active effort to get pregnant or adopt/foster this makes them good parent.  I would have thought that was obvious but there you go.  However, now the government’s parenting academy has gone one step further, saying that they believe lesbians coupes make better parents than a man and a woman.  When you ad to this the fact that the British Social Attitudes Report states that over a third of people think that same sex couples are as good at parenting as heterosexual couples, this all ads up to some real recognition for the fact that good parents are good parents regardless of orientation.

British professor, Stephen Scott, director of research at the National Academy for Parenting Practitioners is quoted as saying:

Lesbians make better parents than a man and a women

This controversial statement has gotten Mr Scott some heat and Conservative MP Nadine Dorries has responded by suggesting that there are so few lesbian couples with children out there that a fair comparison is not possible.

Professor Scott also suggests that children raised by lesbian couples are more aspirational.  So could it be that different family dynamics lead to different kids?  I find it hard to believe that a child who grows up in a loving home could be more (or less) anything based on the gender of the parents but then I’m no expert.

This news does give LGBTQ parents and prospective parents hope that finally they will be seen as equally capable as their hetrosexual counterparts.  When you look at the case of the French couple who spent 11 years battling for the right to adopt you see the great lengths that people will go to to have a family and statements like these from the experts can only help.
