SapphicWeb2: Venice The Series

veniceAll over the globe lesbians watched with both joy and unbridled annoyance as Otalia weaved their way through the unstable waters of US soap “Guiding Light”. We loved them but at the same time our fists clenched and we tutted to anyone who would listen because these ladies, who were obviously madly in love, were totally desexualised, and I mean totally. I love a hug as much as the next woman, but come on! If it wasn’t for some outstanding acting the whole thing would have been a disaster, and an embarrassing one at that.

However, as I previously blogged here, the ever inspiring Crystal Chappell has come to our rescue. Along with writer Kim Turrisi, Chappell has come up with “Venice the Series”, a web series which will star the two ladies who made up Otalia, Chappell herself and Jessica Leccia. Lesbians everywhere took a breath of relief, finally, we would see a decent story told by people who care, and not commissioned by TV executives who just want to tick a box but are afraid to actually do something worthwhile.

So why did Chappell go to so many lengths to get actors etc so that “Venice” could take place, well here’s the lady herself telling us:

So many women have spent the last few months, since ‘Guiding Light’ ended in mid September, waiting on any news about this series that I can only assume it will have a very loyal following indeed. The cast that Chappell has gathered include Gina Tognoni, Jordan Clarke, Hillary B. Smith of One Life to Live, Michelle Carter, Galen Gering and even Chappell’s husband, Michael Sabatino. However, it’s the reemergence of Chappell and Leccia that has us all in bits waiting.

The last few months have seen fan vid after fan vid on YouTube and any interview with Chappell has been sent around the globe a million times over, from person to person, as we all wait on a date to be announced. At first there was a rumour it would be November, then I heard Thanksgiving weekend (Nov 27th) but then YouTube caught fire as the following was send around in a mass of hysteria:

That’s right people, December 4th 09 is the magic day that is now in all our diaries, the day Season 1 starts.

So what’s it about anyway, well here’s a small synopses in the words of Chappell herself:

a show about families, and life, and all the simplicity of it, and the turmoil of it. We’re going to be following a character named Gina who is a designer, and she is a gay woman

That quote has had us all hooked already, I simply can’t wait to see the real thing. She has also said that there will be a kiss within the first episode and for those of us who watched Otalia with both agony and ecstasy, this is wonderful to hear.

I have to admit that I bought myself a little early xmas present in the V SHOP last weekend, one or two Venice pants shall be winging their way to me in the near future, the boxers are sold out, but I’ll be back! I would encourage those among you who can afford it to support the shop and thus the series as you never know, Season 1 may lead to Season 2 which may lead to those TV executives out there taking note.

For updates on the show you can look at the shows YouTube channel here and when Dec 4th comes around, which it has to eventually, you can watch the show at www.venicetheseries.com. I, for one, can’t wait.

  • Hurrah, I’m SO delighted to finally see some Irish gals championing Otalia, Venice and, of course, the amazing Crystal Chappell. (I know the woman can’t be bought, but I wouldn’t mind renting her for a while…lol).

Living in little old Tuam, Co. Galway, I’ve been feeling a bit lonely in my addiction. I’d even tried to get Gay Community News (GCN) to do a piece on it, but I haven’t seen anything to date….and this is definitely something worth sharing!

Well the 1st episode certainly didn’t disappoint…while many of us were concentrating on getting our kiss, we got much more with a bed scene. And considering the initial still of the show that was first aired on the Connector of the Day with Becky Anderson, hasn’t played out on screen yet, I’m certainly looking forward to what lies ahead.

For those of us have been disappointed by the way Otalia played out, and other shows out there (Pepa & Siliva, Carla & Stella) I think we are lucky to have something to look forward to….and more importantly that Crystal et al, retain full creative control!

  • Thanks so much Rita, is nice to know I’m not the only Irish lady so excited out this. I can’t wait for episode 2 – not long to wait now

We have another article on the show, maybe you’d like to share your thoughts there too, we’d love to hear from you

  • thought this would be exciting. names and faces of already established soap stars. the writing was intriguing, making me want to watch more. but the dialogue was poor (what, they could not curse on tv so they get to do it on the web?, what’s the point, and character to character dialogue without repurcussion?), the acting was horrid and fake, and to top it all off, a 7 minute episode with 25 seconds up front and 1 minute trailing, of credits?! wow, 5 1/2 minutes of…boredom.

    bring back the L word.
