Mauresmo Retires

Amelie-MauresmoToday professional tennis player Amelie Mauresmo confirmed her retirement from the sport.  Having won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon Mauresmo reached the peak of her career in 2004 when she was ranked number one in the world.  Now 30 years of age she has decided to hang up her racket for good.  At a news conference she simply stated:

I came here to announce the end of my career. I made this decision after careful consideration.

It couldn’t have been an easy decision to make but the French woman feels that she can no longer train the way she used to so has decided to call it a day.  She went on to say
I dreamt of this career, I dreamt of winning a Grand Slam title…I lifted trophies in every city in the world and I lived ten magical and unbelievable years
Although she was physically very strong her style of play was more traditional and I for one really enjoyed watching her play.  She collected 25 WTA Tour singles titles in her career and also won the Fed Cup  in 2003 with France.
“When I look back I have no regret and great pride.”
Well you should Amelie, we wish you all the best in the future.

  • She’s a great player.. and very brave to have been so open about her sexuality from the time she was a teenager! She’s had wonderful acheivements (and some heartbreaking disappointments!) in a tough sport… I wish her well in whatever she does next!

  • Wow what a woman! She did so much for the gay community by just being herself. Imagine the bravery it took to be out to the world and the press as a teenager. Phenomenal.

I suppose the road was paved by Billie-Jean and Martinam, but it took some ovaries to walk it.

Oh and she was a fab tennis player too :)

I’m with you though Bear, who do we cheer for now? Most of the players are girlie girls. Where are all the dykes?

  • Maybe one of the girlie girls is a dyke ;)
