I know, Nelly, you're right I know it.

I'd be the first to kick a person (mentally of course) for suggesting that anyone's admission of their sexuality is a must, or that they should be 'forced' to come out.

I applaud them for coming out at all. It's just that I feel somewhat let down. Which is ridiculous of course. They owe me nothing, nor do they owe anyone else anything. Everyone should come out when they are good and ready.

Maybe that's the thing....maybe I should write about why some of us feel like we 'own' gay celebs, or why we expect more of them. Unfairly.

Cynthia Nixon only started dating a woman in 2004 the year Sex and the City ended and likewise Meredith Baxter was long past her career best when she realised she was a lesbian. You can't come out if you don't know you're gay yet.

Certainly there's a long Hollywood tradition of staying in the closet to avoid box office annihilation. But it seems to me that there's enough judgment around being gay without adding to it. Let those of us who feel we can be out, be out. Let everyone else make their own decisions.

"Morality clauses in contracts" - Jesus, where to begin with that by itself?!

Cynthia Nixon wrote a great article for the Huffington Post about the recent defeat of the proposed marriage equality law <a href="http://www.gaelick.com/2009/12/us-update-on-marriage-equality-disappointment-in-new-york/5453/" rel="nofollow">in New York</a>: "<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cynthia-nixon/its-a-helluva-state_b_380268.html" rel="nofollow">It's a Helluva State</a>".

Uber-femme Miranda? Were we watching the same show? I think I knew Cynthia Nixon was gay when I realised Miranda wasn't, and all those overwhelming gay vibes were coming from the actress.

I've read a bit that the delayed coming out can have to do with morality clauses in contracts. So it may not be entirely their own reluctance.

That said, Kirsten Vangsness slipped quietly out of the closet while in the first couple seasons of her first tv series, Criminal Minds. And Rachel Maddow has been out like a mo fo from the very beginning, with no intention of hiding anything. And she's been very successful (admittedly not an actress).

It's happening though. Another 10-15 years and I think we'll have a whole slew of normal, happy queers in the media. The desired demographic 18-49 will have changed. Hell, we'll be at the upper end of that. Jesus. Now I'm depressed. :-p
