SapphicWeb3: Skins Season 4

January 28th 2010 sees the long awaited return of the Skins series on Channel 4.  As you will probably know the writers of the show took an interesting turn for series 3 when they got rid of virtually all of the characters and brought in lots of fresh faces.  Two of which have created a lot of interest among the worldwide lesbian community.  Emily (Kathryn Prescott) and Naomi (Lily Loveless), better known to many as “Naomily”.

Series 3 ended with our lovely couple leaving the school dance hand in hand and leaving lesbians everywhere waiting to see what would happen next.  It is great to see something like this out there for teenagers, how I’d have loved to have a programme of this ilk when I was young.

Skins has thus become something like Bad Girls in that it has gone international.  Lesbians from everywhere seem to be making fan videos on YouTube and it’s great too see it take off in this way and its return to be so anticipated.  It is a shame that there will only be 8 episodes in season 4 but it is quality that counts, not quantity.

So far the series has been written to a high standard, the characters are well developed and they are intelligent too, you can genuinely sympathise with the group of friends as they go through their individual and collective struggles.  Congrats must go to the actors on that score too.  The season 1 & 2 cast of the show included Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel who seems to have a great career ahead of him, the current batch of actors must hope for the same in light of his success.

Here is a sneak peak (SPOILER ALERT)

I am optomistic that the writers will bring our couple a few realistic situations that gay people of their age really face.  It’s not just gay teens that watch this show it is their peers and perhaps even their parents, so lets give them something to think about.

The two actors do a great job and when interviewed are quick to point out that this story is not sensational or ‘different’ in any way but rather a journey like any other.  Here’s little snippet, you can find lots more on YouTube:
