Much as I love Bette & Tina, Willow & Tara hold a special place in my heart. They were the first lesbian couple I ever saw on TV and by seeing them as an example of a happy lesbian relationship, I had the courage to realise what I wanted and eventually come out. Despite the horribly tragic ending of their relationship, they’ll always be one of my all-time favourite TV couples!

I can’t believe Beth and whatsherface from Brookie have done so poorly! For a 13 year old with no interwebs or whathaveya, Brookside was the holy grail of lesbianity. As I look back on myself as a fledgling lesbo, I am reminded of better, more innocent sapphic times.

For me, there is no question that the L word couple, Bette and Tina should be the first pick in this lovely line up. There were several other female couples who ably embodied playful humor or spark and fire, two of those were also on the L word (Alice & Dana / Helena & Dylan), but the chemistry between B & T was the most mature, believable and enduring. There was a history between them and a depth and breadth of feeling that should entitle them to claim this victory not only as a lesbian couple, but as an example of what love can be when we are all in need of some positive examples. Kudos !!
