Getting Lippy

Feb 4th, 2010 | By HAL | Category: The Small Screen

You may have heard some mutterings on t’internet about Lip Service, a new telly show coming from the BBC in the Spring, which will follow the lives of some Scottish lesbians. Scottish lesbians are right up there with brown paper parcels tied up with string on my list of favourite things, so the excitement is mounting here in Gaelick towers. But no, how disappointing! Check out the trailer below, only one of the lezzers has a Scottish accent. Dammit!

The Beebs is describing Lip Service as:

a bold new drama for for BBC Three about the sex lives and love affairs of twenty-something lesbians living in contemporary Glasgow.

For some reason I don’t think they mean thigh-rubbing boldness; sounds like they’re patting themselves on the back for covering such a controversial topic. Sigh…I hate being a controversial topic. Let’s accentuate the positive though – lesbians and people with sexy accents!

The three main characters are:

Frankie - “an irreverent and provocative photographer who avoids commitment at all turns” and has a stereotypically male nickname. But then so do I so who am I to begrudge? She’ll be played by the drop-dead-gorgeous Ruta Gedminta (above). Fans of Spooks and/or Tudors will know Ruta as Rachel and/or Elizabeth Blount.

Cat - “Frankie’s former lover, who may not be as immune to Frankie’s charms as she professes to be”. Cat? Really? Is that pussy jokes I hear in the distance? Cat will be played by Laura Fraser (right) who you should all know as the cutie who stole Shelley Conn’s heart in Nina’s Heavenly Delights. Lucky thing.

Tess – “Cat’s best friend and flatmate who has an uncanny knack of attracting all the wrong sorts of women”, shall be played by Fiona Button (left), who played Lucy Bedford in The Palace.

So, what do you think? Are you looking forward to the The Scottish Word? I know I sure as hell am! It feels like such a long time since we all got our mates together in front of the telly and threw popcorn at anyone who dares speak. Then it’ll be off to the pub to defend the character you like and assassinate the bitch.

No pressure though Lip Service makers, we have Glee so we’re not too badly off. Pretty desperate like, but still have some self-respect. Just about.

  • Scottish lesbians! – Yum!
Also, interesting Laura Fraser fact: she’s appeared in previous leslie-flicks (fnarr), The Investigator and Nina’s Heavenly Delights.

  • Just letting giving you guys a heads-up about some Lip Service gossip… well, soon-to-be-gossip!
I’m doing some marketing work for Helen James Productions, the company who are producing the DVD bonus features for the eventual LS release (check out the webby), and they’ve been back-&-forth ‘tween London and Glasgow, going on set, getting probing ;) interviews with the cast & crew and generally going as deep as they dare into the inner workings of the show!
I’m duty-bound not to leak anything yet… but HJP Tweets a lot… http://twitter.com/HelenJamesProd as does Ruta (Frankie) Gedmintas http://twitter.com/Mighty_Minto
