Gra Mo Chroi
You have a crush on a famous personality. What do you do? You can sigh and dream about the day s/he finally falls for your charms or you can take things into your own hands. Maybe hide in the bush outside their house* and orchestrate casually bumping into each other, then you sweep them off their feet with your wit and charm. Or you could make an hilarious video of them and put it up on YouTube, thus making your love aware of your existence – wedding bells will surely follow.
Now, I’m not saying that this was the reason Evelyn and Kate decided to make Injustice: The Ballad of Sharon Ni Bheolain, but that’s my bet. It worked too, as Ms Ni B is said to be very flattered with the video, even laughing about it with HRH Anne Doyle!
According to Evelyn, “Everyone fancies Sharon, even straight girls!”. And why wouldn’t you? The immaculate hair, the divil in the eye, the smart tude and she’s the ultimate cunning linguist, making Irish sound sexy.
This pair of Sharon lovers met in college and have worked on a number of projects since. Said Evelyn:
I studied drama and music at UCC along with Katie who wrote and sings the song. Katie is incredibly talented.
She writes funny songs whenever she’s inspired. She does it to entertain herself and her friends. Her songs are usually related to TV eg If I Gave You A Fiver, Would You Dress Up Like Macgyver or relationships eg I’m Allergic to Dairy and You Don’t Even Care.
Sounds hilarious and I’m going to try to source these for you, dearest reader. However, you’re no Jedward yourself there Evelyn. It”s hard to get this lady to gush about herself even though she’s not only a Sharon lover, but artistic director of Mná Mná (Ireland’s only lesbian choir). Colour me impressed!
I commissioned Katie to co-facilitate Mná Mná in writing the musical, The Farmer’s Daughter, last year. We performed it in May last year at the Cork Women’s Fun Weekend and film-maker, Lisa Fingleton, made a documentary about it.
The documentary is called Outside I’m Singing and recently won an award at the Claremorris Open Art Exibition. We’re launching the DVD in the Crawford Art Gallery. Hopefully we’ll show it at some film festivals in the near future.
See? I knew anyone who loves our Ms Ni Bheolain is a smart cookie.
