Space n’ Veda Presents Strictly Come Pole Dancing
Every few months, people filing in the doors of the George on a Wednesday are greeted with the sight of a giant silver pole on the stage. This signals the arrival of another “Strictly Come Pole Dancing” night. And, if the thought of pole-dancing drag queens isn’t enticing enough, their instructor, “Fierce” is totally worth the journey!
The pole dancing kicked off with a bang as a “monk” came down the stairs, robes on, hood up and swinging an incense burner. Then the music got a bit faster, so he tore off his robes (to reveal a net tank-top and PVC underwear) and started swinging off the pole. This was obviously no monk, but rather Veda’s boyfriend Nikki Mafia-celebrating his birthday in style!
As the night went on, the pole dancers, both professional and amateur, had some fantastic performances to songs as varied as Rhianna’s Russian Roulette to Jace Everett’s Bad Things to Ne-Yo’s Closer. Highlights of the night were DJ Karen’s comedy performance of David Guetta/Akon’s Sexy Chick, and a performer whose name I can’t remember who sang and danced to Sweet Transvestite from Rocky Horror.
A sign of the crowd’s enjoyment of the entire show was evident from the laughter at the funnier performances, the awe at how strong Nikki Mafia is, the cheering at Veda’s efforts…and the fact that every female jaw in the house was on the floor every time Fierce took to the pole. I’d highly recommend checking it out the next time the George are having this night, and I think anyone else who was there would agree!
Wednesdays in the George are free in until 11pm, €2 for students after then, €4 for everybody else. All pints, spirits and longneck bottles are €4, with selected shots for €2. Space n’ Veda starts around 11.45pm, followed by DJ Rocky from 12.35-2.30am every Wednesday.
