Oscars 2010

Last night (or this morning for us) saw the 82nd Academy Awards handed out and the highlight for me was the wonderful Kathryn Bigelow becoming the first woman in history to win the Best Director award for The Hurt Locker.  The film won six Oscars in all including the prestigious Best Picture award as well as the coveted editing gong.  Add to this the fact that The Hurt Locker is the lowest-grossing best picture winner in Oscar history and you can see the magnitude of her achievement.

It is amazing to think that it has taken this long for a woman to win the directing award but better late than never.  I had hoped that Jane Campion might have won it for The Piano in 1993 but unfortunately Jane was against Stephen Spielberg and Schindlers List that year.

Other winners on the night were Mo’Nique for best actress in a supporting role, this was more than deserved for the film Precious.  I was sad to see that Colin Firth didn’t win for the amazing A Single Man but Jeff Bridges was great in Crazy Heart so I won’t deny him the honor.

All in all it was a good night and real acting and good films won out over the world of special effects.

An honerable mention for Tina Fey and Robert Downey Jr introducing the award or Best Original Screenplay which was hilarious, unlike most introductions.

You can see a full round up of the winners here and a highlight show will be aired on RTE 2 at 9pm.
