I have mentioned on Gaelick before that I am a big YouTube junkie.  I have to admit that I spend quite a lot of time on there, too much some might say.  I joined in order to watch some lesbian TV story lines from across the water but have been well and truly sucked in over the last year.

One part of the YouTube phenomenon that I never really understood are the music videos that fans make to TV shows.  They are like tribute videos, a person edits together clips of a show or shows and puts it all to music.  Over the last year I have found a few that I really like, but I am still curious as to why people make them at all.  So I decided to go to the source and ask.  Here are some of the responses I got:

Videos are fun for me to make because they are a creative venture just because I love the song and the characters. They evoke an emotion that parallels the music and they show the best parts of the relationship. In short, they make you ‘feel’….happy, sad, hopeful, sentimental, you name it, there’s a song for it. That’s why I make them anyway.

I love to edit lesbian films and make videos that represent every woman and girl around the world, all colors and ages in the way we want everyone else to see us, with all the respect we deserve. We want people to stop making the word “lesbian” a synonymous of “pornography”! YouTube give us that opportunity, and even with the flaggers presence there -my channel has been eliminated three times in one month! – I feel very grateful being able to express myself in that way and makes me really happy that some wonderful women appreciate the love I put in all those collages. Thank you, girls!

So, it would appear that it’s an expression of what the song and the characters bring out in the editor.  It’s a way to share moments of a film/TV show that really resonate with you.

One thing I have gotten out of the videos that people are kind enough to share with me, is a list of some films and TV shows that I had not seen.  Many of the fan vids have clips I don’t recognise and so I can run off and look them up.  This is also true of the songs, I have discovered many an artist through these videos.  YouTube is even clever enough to allow you to link to iTUNES and buy a particular song that’s in the video you are watching.
