“Sex Not Specified.”
A Scot, Norrie May-Welby, has made history this month by having authorities create a genderless category on all official documentation. Norrie lives in Australia where this new category has come into effect.
Norrie was born “male”, however, 20 years ago she went through gender reassignment surgery. Several years after her surgery Norrie decided to stop taking female hormones and this has lead doctors to say that they are unable to determine her gender. Norrie has said:
Those concepts, man or woman, just don’t fit me, they are not my actual reality, and, if applied to me, they are fiction. At 48 years of age I’m less inclined to just humour other people’s delusions about gender and try to conform to one of their expected options.
Well said.
It is great to see that unlike our government some don’t have such a black and white outlook when it comes to issues of gender. At least there are some places in the world where people don’t have to pigeon hole themselves.
Norrie is quoted as saying
I talked to my mum about this when we were discussing how parents could be helped to deal with transgender children.
You love your children, she said, you may try to change them when they’re growing up, but after a time, there’s nothing you can do but accept the way they are.
You may not always understand them, but you accept them
Mammy’s really do have a way with words don’t they.

That’s freaking amazing. Hell, I’m not even sure why the government needs to know our gender. What does it matter to them?
