Corrie’s Sophie plants one on Sian at long last
We had Beth and Margerat on Brookie, Zoe Tate (the longest running TV lesbian) on Emmerdale, Della and Binnie on Eastenders and now Sian & Sophie on Corrie. Last week saw the long awaited kiss between Sophie Webster and her best friend Sian. The development of Sophie’s character has been very well done. The writers have taken their time and done it properly so we all cheered her on when she went for it!
‘The girl next door’ realising she is gay on the longest running and most watched British soap opera is no small thing. The show celebrates 50 years this year and this will be it’s first lesbian storyline, better late than never. Sophie is played by 17 year old Brooke Vincent who has said
I think instead of just throwing me in there and just putting it out about ‘the big kiss’ – it’s not about that. They’ve tried to get it across that it’s nothing about the kiss or the relationship, it’s about how they both feel and it’s played as a love story
What’s really pleasing is that we have been told the storyline will run and run. Rather than having a kiss and then moving along, the producers have said they intend to allow the story to grow and to have these characters mature together. I don’t know about you but having people see this kind of storyline, hopefully cheering them on, is what I think our TV shows need more of.
So it seems Corrie is taking another step into the 21st century and a very welcome one it is too. I will be looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
