Navratilova diagnosed with breast cancer

The word legend is one that sports commentators use far to often for my taste.  All someone has to do is win a few matches and some people think that makes them a legend in their sport.  Martina Navratilova however, truly is a sporting legend.  Just look at her stats, she really does stand alone.

Of course we members of the LGBTQ community love her for more than just her unrivaled ability on a tennis court.  We admire her for Being Herself, for being out and proud and for waving that rainbow flag high, long before many other sports stars dared to do so.

So it was with a heavy heart that I read that Navratilova has been diagnosed with breast cancer.  Thankfully it has been caught early and the prognosis is very good indeed.  Let’s hope that as with the likes of Melissa Etheridge, Navratilova comes through this as soon as possible.

She has said:

It knocked me on my ass, really. I feel so in control of my life and my body, and then this comes, and it’s completely out of my hands.

Having had a lumpectomy Navratilova will start 6 weeks of radiation therapy next month.

Everyone at Gaelick wishes Martina a very speedy and full recovery.
